NEED FOR RURAL ENTERPRISES
Obama hopes for change and I hope his hopes are fulfilled, especially in the area of rural enterprise. Rural America needs to be ready for the hordes of city folks fleeing the cities as they burn and crumble. Even if I'm half right, not all cities will become Detroit's, but many will do so.
Rural America has few votes and generally vote Republican -- so what makes any of us think the Democrats will court rural America with kind of money such as is going to the financial institutions and possibly the auto makers?
If any of the Democrat leaders will just listen for a moment to the rural heart beat, they will learn:
  • Land cost less, water and utilities can cost less.
  • Start-ups can use an old barn.
  • Labor is plentiful and usually focused, hardworking and productive.
  • Zoning, land use and building regulations allow for more flexibility in using land for enterprises.
  • Natural resources are usually closer to the processing plant which means transportation of raw materials is usually less costly.
  • Creation of cluster villages (eco and permaculture) can greatly increase the productivity of human and natural resources. http://masallp.wetpaint.com
  • Intentional communities can grow most of their food and fuel without need for a massive transportation network. http://algaloildiesel.wetpaint.com
  • Local communities can adopt their own green energy plan: http://oregonenergypromises.wetpaint.com
  • Local communities can generate green electricity, using the Peoples Utility District laws, and distribute the energy via a Locavore MESH network: http://algaloildiesel.wetpaint.com/page/PROSPECTS+FOR+THE+BIODIESEL+INDUSTRY
  • Intentional communities can build their own affordable straw bale buildings which are very energy efficient and cost 1/3rd of contractor built stick house. http://strawbalebuilders.wetpaint.com
  • One of the businesses of the intentional community is retrofitting older vehicles with blown engines with a hybrid electric plug in motor system: http://leaguedemorepub.wetpaint.com/page/THE+BIOVOLT+TRUCK+AND+THE+SLIDING+PISTON+GENERATOR?t=anon
  • The intentional community with a dairy operation provides milk and milk products and in addition, syngas for generation of combined heat and power, and biochar, agriculture's “black gold” for soil amendment.
  • Social and business networking via the Internet is a must. Discussions can be online, real time, with archives for later podcasting: http://worldcybercafe.wetpaint.com/
What is really weird, the funding agencies, including federal, state, local and private foundations are too busy giving out grants to their friends and family and members of their religious order, to bother with really solid science and engineering discoveries which greatly advance growing our own food and fuel and greatly reduce our dependence on foreign oil. It's as though our funders want rural America and rural, small business enterprises to fail or never get started.
For instance, the algae-to-biodiesel industry is trying to get started. What better area to grow algae than on our not-so-good farm land soils? My studies as an ag engineer have led me to discover how to use cell bomb technology to blow-up the 25 micron, spheroid Chlorella vulgaris, which has a tough cell wall, and thus extract the algal oil. After three months of pitching the idea to every known funder and company interested in how to extract algal oil, I got about three semi-serious inquiries, none of which matured into any deal. See: Prospects for the Biodiesel Industry: http://algaloildiesel.wetpaint.com/page/PROSPECTS+FOR+THE+BIODIESEL+INDUSTRY.
I may as well go back to practicing law and make savings of $125,00 so I can build my own pilot plant. I'm ready for change, but I'll believe it when I see it. Thus far, all I've seen is a great amount of green washing.
